We know that Halloween will be celebrated a little differently this year due to COVID-19. However, that doesn't mean that it can't be celebrated at all! From small family gatherings to social media posts to trick or treating from the driveway, you can still dress up in costumes and enjoy your candy. If you're shopping for costumes and decorations, look no further than the annual pop-up shop Spirit Halloween. This year they have eight retail locations throughout Northeast Ohio or you can shop online at www.spirithalloween.com . Their store hours are Monday through Saturday 10am-10pm and Sunday 10am-7pm. On Halloween (Saturday, October 31st), their store hours will change to 9am-8pm. See the list below for locations.

Unfortunately, another locally owned business will be shutting its doors permanently due to a lack of sales from the COVID-19 pandemic. Scout & Molly's, a national franchise boutique that carries brands such as Spiritual Gangster, French Connection, Joseph Ribkoff, and Sanctuary, will be closing its Pinecrest location (400 Park Avenue Suite 184, Orange OH 44122). Originally slated to shut up shop on November 1st, the boutique has decided to close its doors at the end of business on Thursday, October 29th, 2020. Store hours are Monday through Saturday 11:00am to 6:00pm and Sunday 12:00pm to 6:00pm.
Fans of the boutique can still shop online at www.scoutandmollys.com or at its nearest location in Columbus at Easton Towne Center (4042 Fenlon Street, Columbus OH 43219).

Many Clevelanders on Instagram have been wondering what happened to the IG account for Avalon Exchange Coventry. Over a week ago it disappeared without notice, leaving customers frustrated at not being able to view the store's latest inventory virtually. Well, the shop has re-emerged with a new Instagram handle: @avaloncov. At the time of this publishing, it is unsure as to the reasons why the account name was changed. However, CLE shopping enthusiasts are beyond overjoyed to have Avalon Exchange Coventry's presence back on Instagram. The retailer hasn't missed a beat in posting their newest arrivals, so hopefully their thousands of IG followers will be back to show their support.
Avalon Exchange is a resell store that buys new with tags and gently used clothing, shoes, and accessories from individuals and resells them to the public. There are two Northeast Ohio locations: one in Cleveland on Detroit Road and another in Cleveland Heights on Coventry Road.
Unfortunately, another national retailer is closing its doors. Discount department store chain Stein Mart has filed for bankruptcy. There currently isn't a definitive date on when they will close. However, they have ended their online sales. Currently, you can take advantage of the 40% to 80% off clearance sale going on in their stores. As with most store closing sales, only cash and debit/credit are accepted as payment. If you have a gift card or merchandise credit, those funds have to be used by September 21, 2020; otherwise you will have to file a claim with their bankruptcy case to get your money back. National retailer of women's apparel and accessories New York & Company has decided to close all of its storefronts and focus strictly on online sales. NY&Co is just the latest apparel company to do so. Some stores have done this due to a decline in sales from the COVID-19 quarantine; others were already headed that way prior to the viral outbreak, because many people are shopping online more frequently than they are shopping in store. Cleveland area locations (listed below) are scheduled to be open until Monday, September 28, 2020. So take advantage of shopping in store by then; otherwise your only option will be to shop online and wait for your purchases to be sent to you.

Earlier this year we reported that Tuesday Morning was closing several of its locations around town, including their University Heights location. Luckily, the retail space located at 13908 Cedar Road won't be vacant for too much longer; Goodwill is moving in. Currently, they are renovating the space by adding more square footage to the front of the store. At the time of this reporting, we weren't given a definitive opening date, but the thrifting retailer was hoping to have this location be open for business before the end of March 2020. However, due to the coronavirus outbreak, the opening date has been delayed. We will keep you posted as to when this Goodwill location officially opens.

It is the end of an era; the adult version of Claire's stores is calling it quits. All Charming Charlie retail stores will be closing permanently across the United States this year. The Houston-based retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month. They will be keeping their 264 retail locations open through the end of August 2019. However, they have stopped taking online orders, and customers must use their gift cards in store by Wednesday, August 14, 2019. The company has additional markdowns off of items in addition to the major clearance sales. Along with their regular merchandise of ladies' accessories, shoes, handbags, and clothes, they will also be selling off store fixtures and display cases. All sales, of course, are final. It's officially August, and guess what that means?
It's Back to School Season!!!
So to help parents out financially with getting their students ready for the new school year, for the third year in a row the State of Ohio has given parents a hand in affording new school supplies and new clothes by devoting a whole weekend where retail stores are not to charge consumers sales tax on such items as clothing, shoes, and school materials.
The holiday starts on Friday, August 2, 2019 at 12:00 a.m. and ends on Sunday, August 4, 2019 at 11:59 p.m.
During the holiday, the following items are exempt from sales and use tax:
Overall, for every $100 you spend on the items listed above this weekend, you will only pay that $100.00. You save $8.00 in sales tax that during any other time of the year would have been added to your subtotal of $100.00 to give you a total amount of $108.00 to pay.
So enjoy taking advantage of this sales tax break, whether or not you are a parent or teacher.
Happy shopping!

As we have continued to see over the last several years, many retail giants are having to close their doors time and time again. Earlier this year it was the shoe retailer Payless. This time, Tuesday Morning is closing a few of its stores across the country, including their University Heights location. While many of their other locations are easily visible from the street for potential notorious shoppers to find, their University Heights location is a hidden gem in its spot at Cedar Center Plaza. Many shopping enthusiasts only knew of this spot by happenstance when visiting its neighbor Dollar Tree or purposefully searching Tuesday Morning's website looking for the nearest location of the national retailer. And this, truthfully, may have been the reason the company has chosen to close this location in order to make budget cuts. So while wiping the tears from our eyes about having one less storefront to buy our home goods from, The Notorious Shopper Magazine is eager to take advantage of the clearance sales throughout this store. It is truly bittersweet.

LAST DAY OPEN: JULY 7, 2019
In an economy that is constantly changing due to technological advances, many storefront businesses take a hit. With the advent and commercialization of digital music over the last twenty years, record stores cease to exist in this day and age. Except for f.y.e.
Due to changing its main focus from brick-and-mortar sales to a strong online presence, Trans World Entertainment Corporation (TWEC), parent company of f.y.e., has been able to keep f.y.e. stores open due to supplying companies like ebay, WalMart, and Amazon with an array of items through its etailz brand. So it comes as no surprise that f.y.e would close one of its brick-and-mortar retail locations.
Says Mike Feurer, CEO of Trans World Entertainment Corporation, "We continue to see sales growth in the etailz segment ... In the fye segment, although in the midst of continued structural and external challenges, we are focused on efforts to differentiate our entertainment merchandise towards creating a unique specialty retailing experience of choice for families and fans of popular culture and fun."
Translation: f.y.e. will focus on its online sales geared towards Star Wars, the Marvel Comic Universe, the latest pop craze, and the newest digital entertainment tech toys.
As for now, notorious shoppers can have fun scouring the Tower City f.y.e. location looking for selections to add to their music and movie collections as well as completing some early Christmas and/or birthday shopping. The current discounts as of Saturday, August 4, 2018, are 30% off of new music and movies and 40% off of used music and movies. There are electronics, tech toys, and novelty items that range in discount from 30% to 50% off. Notable items include turntables, virtual reality headsets, and TV show DVD collections.
Rest assured that if you decide to give this sale a try, it will be worth your time. Just ask Ms. Notorious Shopper herself; she was able to find Prince's Ultimate Collector's Edition of Purple Rain, consisting of three CDs, one DVD, and a collector's booklet in brand new condition at 30% off. The Prince lover in her rejoices.
Happy shopping!

.....And the local shopping enthusiasts are not too happy.
As reported this past Spring, the Marshalls that was located at the Pavilion Shopping Center at 24055 Chagrin Boulevard in Beachwood was moved to Harvard Park Shopping Center at 4063 Richmond Road in Warrensville Heights, into the former location of the Golfsmith store. Their grand opening was Thursday, May 10th, 2018, and in the first months within their new home, NEO shopping enthusiasts have entered the store with grand expectations but left brokenhearted and frustrated.
Although many shoppers like the Harvard Park location because it is right off of one freeway (I-271) and near two other freeways (I-480 & Rt. 422), the new location is noticeably smaller in square footage than its former Chagrin Boulevard location. So with this major difference comes major disappointment. From complaints of there not being enough room to navigate in between clothing racks and store displays to there not being much selection to offer in various departments, too many of our enthusiasts walk around the store in utter diappointment.
Says one notorious shopper, "I had been looking for the children's clothing for fifteen minutes, and it took another shopper to hear my verbal frustration and point out the small section that I had passed by several times."
"They should've used a bigger space than this!" exclaimed another notorious shopper. "They should've expanded this store to include the empty storefront next door," she said, referencing the available retail space between Marshalls and Club Champion. "This is such a letdown, especially since Marshalls is one of my favorite stores."
"They should've just left the store on Chagrin if it meant less merchandise to choose from," opined another notorious shopper.
We couldn't agree more.
